Republican strategist Gus Portela told Hill.TV's "Rising" on Thursday that a new law banning most abortions in Alabama may energize the Democratic base ahead of the 2020 elections.
"The play that was called was wrong, in my opinion," Portela, executive director at Accuracy in Media, said.
"It might create some problems in the future, and I think it might energize, politically speaking, ... a very important base for the Democrats, especially in a state like Alabama where [Sen.] Doug Jones [D] is running for reelection," he continued.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) signed the legislation, which would make all abortions illegal, even in the cases of rape and incest, on Wednesday.
Ivey said in a statement that the bill "closely resembles" an unenforceable abortion ban that has been part of Alabama law for more than 100 years.
Liberals, however, fear the Alabama law and campaigns in other states to make abortion illegal after a fetal heartbeat is detected could be lead to the reversal of Roe v. Wade, which legalizes the procedure across the U.S.
Democratic presidential candidates have seized on the news out of Alabama, calling the measure an attack on women's reproductive health.
