The U.S. Navy Is Pushing Fast Development, Early Deployment Of Unmanned Warships
Loren Thompson
The U.S. Navy faces an existential challenge in the Western Pacific. China’s economic power is growing rapidly, and as it does the pace of Beijing’s military modernization is greatly outstripping the efforts of other regional players. If current trends continue, America’s Navy—the de facto lead service for joint efforts in the Western Pacific—could be overwhelmed. I laid out the danger in a commentary earlier this month.
The question is what to do about it. The Navy is pursuing many paths to preserving maritime superiority, such as increasing its stores of long-range anti-ship missiles in the region and shifting more stealthy attack subs to the Chinese littoral. But those measures by themselves won’t arrest the rise of Chinese military power. Something unusual will be needed to successfully counter Beijing’s ambitions.
