Hundreds Of Flights Canceled As SAS Pilots Strike In Scandinavia

David Nikel  Contributor

More than 70,000 passengers will suffer canceled or delayed flights across Europe on Friday as more than 1,400 pilots strike in a row over pay and the predictability of their shift patterns. During Friday 673 flights will be canceled, with uncertainty on hundreds more over the weekend. Should the strikes continue over the weekend as seems likely, anything up to 250,000 passengers could be affected.

International flights hit hardest

The strike affects most domestic and European departures, and all long-haul flights including those to/from the US. The strike does not include flights operated by SAS partners such as CityJet, which make up approximately 30% of all departures. SAS will send updates via SMS and email to those passengers affected, with some already booked on routes with rival airlines.

“First and foremost, we apologize”, SAS information chief Knut Morten Johansen told NRK. “Now, fortunately, we have done a good job in advance to reduce the scope. We made a solid move yesterday by pre-canceling so that there was more predictability today. I think we have a less chaotic situation at the airports than would otherwise have been the case.”

Pretty annoying.  I was supposed to head to Stockholm this weekend, but all flights were cancelled.  We can be thankful we do not live in a country where 2/3 of workers belong to a labor union.

We are nearly a week into the strike.  One more week, and the annual profit is eliminated.  If the airline comes anywhere near the union's demand (13% raises) the operation will run out of cash.  Not sure what happens from that point.  The holding company is partially state-owned, and knowing the scandinavians they will probably bail out the unions by looting the taxpayers.
