Bill de Blasio says Green New Deal will ban ‘inefficient’ steel and glass skyscrapers

If the Big Apple is to become the Green Apple, it will have to ban the steel and glass towers that form its signature skyline, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.

De Blasio, speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” said that city’s most iconic structures – the tall skyscrapers seen from miles away – are the “biggest source of emissions” in New York City. The drastic change, and a switch to only renewable energy within five years, are necessary for Gotham to embrace the Green New Deal, de Blasio said.

“We are putting clear, strong mandates” to lower emissions, he said, warning property owners will face massive fines unless buildings are retrofitted.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is prepared to offset his own personal carbon footprint by saddling New Yorkers with a Green New Deal that would ban traditional skyscrapers.

De Blasio spoke with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough on Monday’s “Morning Joe,” addressing his proposed Green New Deal for New York City and its desired impact. (RELATED: De Blasio’s Office Issues Guidance On What Should Go In Your Toilet)

“The biggest source of emissions in New York City is buildings,” De Blasio began. “We are putting clear, strong mandates. The first of any city on the earth to say to building owners, ‘clean up your act, retrofit, clean up.’ If you don’t, there’s serious fines, $1 million or more for the biggest buildings. This mandate is going to guarantee we reduce emissions.”

Massive fines.
On top of massive property taxes, massive transportation fees, massive utility costs, massive salaries, and massive property costs,
there is this massive negative attitude towards large corporations.

You'd have to be nuts to move your business to NYC.

Generation IV Nuclear, should be high on priority lists.

It uses spent nuclear waste for fuels, is safe and clean.

Unlike wind and solar, it doesn't require batteries for storage.

It could be sited at existing nuclear locations.

It has many advantages, few disadvantages.

It is NOT in place of hydrocarbons. It is instead of solar/wind subsidies.

Personally...I think the “biggest source of emissions” in New York City emanates from City Hall...not the skyline of Manhattan.

And the libs wonder why people are flocking out of there. I left NYS 13 years ago and don't miss it one bit.

Too items I would modify.

One 4 Gen technology is not using spent nuclear fuel.

Two, batteries are not a bad thing.  Combined with steady state nuclear, they can produce power than used during the night and provide needed power during the heat of the day spikes.  Nuclear does not ramp up and down well.

Nukes good, batteries okay.  The batteries allow us to use more nukes.

I am not pushing it. I am putting it out for discussion.

Gov. Rick Perry has the DOE apparently moving Gen IV along.

Gen IV Nuclear is a political compromise, between Green New Deal (GND) types and Climate Change Deniers.

You might say: "Yes but GND is not necessary, since the Climate Change Deniers are correct."

The alternative needs to be on the table.

In the longer run, billions of middle-class Chinese and Indians Brazilians, Russians etc. will want energy.

By developing nuclear technology, the US could coninue to be the "energy solutions" technology powerhouse that we have been so far.

Typical lib.

Never cause him inconvenience, just let the little people be inconvenienced.

If it were up to him, he would be a member of the Politburo.  He considers himself too important to be subject to the constraints he puts on others.
