Agent Orange: US to clean up toxic Vietnam War air base

The US has launched a multi-million dollar clean-up operation at an air base in Vietnam it used to store the notorious chemical Agent Orange.

The ten-year programme, unveiled more than four decades after the end of the Vietnam War, will cost $183m (£141m).

The site at Bien Hoa airport, outside Ho Chi Minh City, is considered the most contaminated in the country.

Agent Orange was a defoliant sprayed by US forces to destroy jungles and uncover the enemy's hiding places.

Not about Agent Orange, but for awhile I worked at an environmental engineering firm.

We had a project to clean and mitigate solvents that came from jet engine testing, near Rancho Cordova, near Sacramento.

Apparently at another airfield, in El Toro CA the USMC flew jets. The planes were washed down using solvents, which leached through the soil, into the ground water aquifer.

I watching the cleanup of an old petroleum-geneeral industrial waste site. Most of my town is built upon old oil fields. I havee seen building sites dug down 15-20 ft. to replace soil.

Note that LBJ started the use of Agent Orange,  Nixon stopped it.

@dfwgator

Speaking as someone who operated along the Ho Chi Mihn Trail in Laos and Cambodia,and who ended up losing my career in the army due to Agent Orange medical problems and is now being treated for Stage  4 Lymphatic Cancer,there were good reasons to use it,and using it saved lives.
