A Galveston-based construction firm has been awarded part of a $1 billion contract to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced Tuesday that SLSCO Ltd., a general contracting firm based in Galveston, was awarded a $789 million firm-fixed-price contract for border replacement wall construction.

SLSCO's bid was one of nine solicited for the border wall. Six bids  were selected. Work on the wall will be performed in Santa Teresa, N.M., with an estimated completion date of Oct. 1, 2020.
