Icelandic budget airline WOW Air ceases operations
Video by CBS News

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Icelandic budget airline WOW Air ceased operations on Thursday, stranding passengers across two continents.

In a statement on its website the airline, which had earlier suspended all its flights, told passengers there would be no further flights and advised them to check flights with other airlines for ways to reach their destinations.

The airline, founded by entrepreneur Skuli Mogensen, began operations in 2012 and specialized in ultra-cheap flights between North America and Europe, with flights to airports in cities including Washington, D.C, New York, Paris, London and its Reykjavik hub.

It surprised me that this was one of the main stories on the nightly news. Nice planes, low rates.

We flew WOW in September to Frankfurt. It was a few hundred dollars cheaper per person than the other carriers, but of course there were fees for extra luggage (we didn't take any extras) and food was was an additional charge.

It was a little hectic connecting in Iceland, because all WOW flights from the US arrived around the same time, and we had to dash through customs along with a few hundred other people, thence to our departing continental flights. It wasn't too bad, overall. Glad they waited until now (not last September) to go out of business.
