LAS CRUCES – The tough desert terrain of White Sands Missile Range will be filled with thousands of people from all over the world Sunday, March 17, to march in the 30th annual Bataan Memorial Death March, which honors service members who defended the Philippines during World War II.
The challenging march began in 1989 to commemorate the Bataan Death March, the forcible transfer of tens of thousands of American and Filipino prisoners of war by the Imperial Japanese Army. The soldiers were marched for days under harsh circumstances in an unrelenting environment where many died. Survivors have been known to participate in the annual march to honor their fallen comrades.
