Can Beto O’Rourke Really Put Texas in Play as Vice Presidential Nominee?

March 15, 2019
Richard D. Baris

Since Francis “Beto” O’Rourke changed his mind and announced he is running for president, media pundits have speculated he at least could put Texas in play as a vice presidential candidate.

For the purpose of this article, we’ll stick to the prospect of him being the 2020 vice presidential nominee for two reasons.
1.That claim has denominated conversation among prognosticators, the reason being even more important.
2.Democrats are not bullish on his chances of winning the nomination. But they absolutely hope a Beto candidacy will generate enough excitement to put the state in play, particularly if he is ultimately chosen to be the vice presidential nominee.

The best case to be made for a vice president’s “home team” advantage is by far the 1960 presidential election between John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon.

No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

The last VP candidate from Texas that was able to swing the state was LBJ because Lyndon knew where the skeletons were and played hardball to win.

LLoyd Bentsen was just too nice a guy to help loser Michael Dukakis.

Knowing how to skateboard across the stage is not the same as knowing your opponents.

Beto is a lightweight.

Sure!  Nominate him please!

Not much of a swing back in 1960 to elect a democrat.  Texas had been electing rather steady statewide at and before that time.

1952 and 1956 were more of a swing to elect President Eisenhower.

Robert Francis was born to do this: run for president after he firmly stated that he wasn't. As for being a lightweight, I think he's more of a butterfly-weight with all that arm flapping.

He uses a whole lot of words to say absolutely nothing. I doubt he'd take a VP slot. I wonder if his criminal history, which we now know started as a young teen, will induce democommies to vote for him.
Principles matter. Words matter.

I've noticed that a LOT of people like Robert Francis have the knack of being able to talk all day while saying not a damned thing.

better read up on the 1960 election.  Kennedy  barely won in Texas with 50.52% of the vote.

Every source you can find will tell you that the Massachusetts guy selected Lyndon ONLY because of carrying the state.

Read Bill OReilly's book 'Killing Kennedy' and he will tell you the same thing.

Eisenhauer was a war hero born in Texas and was considerably different than a rich kid Senator from Massuchesetts.

My mother, a life long Texan,  absolutely refused to vote for Kennedy in 1960 because he was a Catholic. Texas was filled with people just like her at the time and, if you are any student of Texas history at all, no one will need to explain to you why that was.
