ANALYSIS/OPINION:

That’s right, you heard it here first, folks: Joe Biden will be the 46th president of the United States.

The avuncular 76-year-old from hardscrabble Scranton, Pennsylvania, will waltz into office in November 2020. The only question is whether Barack Obama will come out of retirement to join Uncle Joe on the ticket.

He’s gonna go — you know he’s going to go. He’s not even really playing coy now, he’s just letting the other wannabes shoot themselves repeatedly in both feet before he jumps into the race.

And boy are they. The Democrats already in the field are promising free healthcare, free college tuition, free cash for everyone (even if they “choose” not to work). They’re promising slavery reparations, a top tax rate of 70 percent or higher, and one new member of Congress — whom the Democratic National Committee chairman has called “the future of the party” — is calling for the end of planes and cars, as well as farting cows.

Uncle Joe’s not going to play that game. He’s a career politician (he only held a “real” job for a few years in his 20s, and he’s been living off the public dole for nearly half a century). He’s run for president twice, in 1988 and again 20 years later, so he knows the game inside and out. And after a decade of political sniping, 2020 is tailor-made for a middle-of-the-road candidate, which fits Mr. Biden to a T.

I can't stand slow Joe.  Still, if I was hard pressed to predict a 2020 outcome.....  AND...  If they can keep this guy away from creepy little girl photo-op's, he has to be the front runner.  He's faux-centralist enough to dupe middle America.

Trump really needs to face a hard left dim in '20 to sew it up.

Sloe Joe reminds me of Jon Carry in 2004:  The default "statesman" candidate when the extremist candidate blows up in IA or NH, like Howie Dean.  If Biteme gets the nod it will be because the Leftists got wiped out early.  A real possibility because every Commie in the woodpile think they are the ones to finally turn the US into a third world shithole, and they're splintered.

I see your point (mine was a bit tongue-in-cheek).  I'd sure as heck never vote for that, but I can see a lot of "third way" Rats who would.  My prognostication is pretty poor lately, but I think he might be the one left standing by April.

Let's face reality - if Trump is our nominee,  the Democratic candidate - whether it's Biden or not - will likely be the 46th President. 

The GOP has an existential choice to make, and it will take courage to stand up to President Trump and urge him to declare victory and retire to his family and businesses.    But it may be the only way to keep Trump's chaos from causing an unthinkable result - a socialist President of the United States.

The status quo right now is Trump's chaos.   Don't forget that he won in 2016 largely because of disgust with the Democratic nominee.   In 2020, that disgust will be visited on Trump.   The Dems want, above all else, to make the next election a referendum on Trump's chaos.   And,  so framed, the conditions will be perfect  - just like they were in 2016 - for the opposition party to elevate a change agent.  Except that this time, that change agent is likely to be a socialist,  addicted to identity politics and green religious fanaticism.

Chaos fomented 100% by the Swamp in order to protect itself.  They have no party loyalties inside the beltway.   If what you predict in fact happens it will accomplish only one thing. It will hasten the day the shooting war begins.

Wait, there’s more. Mr. Trump flipped Wisconsin and Michigan and Pennsylvania in the 2016 election. But Scranton Joe’s appeal to blue-collar workers will likely flip them right back. He’s from Pennsylvania: He wins that in a walk. The DNC is holding its convention in Milwaukee: Mr. Biden will win that, too. And the blue-collar vote in Michigan will put him over the top there as well.

Mr. Trump, meanwhile, has major problems. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former top strategist for Bill Clinton and Obama’s White House chief of staff, laid them out in a recent Atlantic magazine piece. “Not only is he now underwater in the three states that pushed him to victory in 2016 — he’s now unexpectedly vulnerable in places such as Texas, Florida, and Ohio as well. His popularity rises to 50 percent or higher in states that total a mere 102 electoral votes. Probably of more concern to his campaign: He’s fallen below 40 percent approval in states encompassing a 201-electoral-vote bloc.”

But one last note to Democrats: Uncle Joe is the only winner you’ve got. Bernie can’t do it. Neither can Kamala or Cory or Pocahontas or Tulsi or Julian or Beto (but look for Mr. Biden to pick Julian Castro or Beto O’Rourke, both from Texas, as his running mate). And if you go with Hillary, you will lose worse than last time.

The author, this Joseph Curl sort of makes a light case out of his argument. This is not 1980, we do have a changing electorate.

At the age of 45, Biden decided to run for President.  He was the biggest fundraiser at the start of the 1988 campaign.  By the time the primaries rolled around, he trailed only Michael Dukakis in fundraising.  The end result?  Biden ended up getting less primary votes than David Duke or Mike Trafficant, or Douglas Applegate.

Twenty years later, Biden ran again.  Leading up to Iowa, he was the fourth leading Democrat fundraiser and had 20 years more experience on the national stage.  Yet for his efforts, he received only 1% of the Iowa caucus vote.

With this history, I wholeheartedly encourage the 77-year-old Biden to jump into the 2020 race.

Governor Walker lost Wisconsin.  Just barely.

Democrats have their convention in Milwaukee as the article states, so yes, that is a true battleground.

We (general sense, I know some here are not for the Prez.) will need to ban together to put together another winning coalition.

Perhaps, having that convention there will give the Dems a big bump, barf alert!

Agree with all of that.   We can't count on Wisconsin in 2020.    The time for unity is after the convention.   Right now,  those of us concerned about the Dems' march to socialism and other extreme positions need to speak out as loudly as we can that we need alternatives to Donald Trump as the nominee.   Extremism,  as history tells us, finds purchase in the wake of chaos.   Trump's policies notwithstanding, he has been a failure in growing his coalition.   As much as we need many of those policies to continue, we need to recognize that to do so, we need new leadership.
