The American Psychiatrist Association, in 1973, adopted APA’s Section 7.3 in the Principles of Medical Ethics with Annotations Especially Applicable to Psychiatry, which became known as the “Goldwater Rule“. “It is unethical for a psychiatrist to offer a professional opinion unless he or she has conducted an examination and has been granted proper authorization for such a statement.â€
“The penalty for breaking the Goldwater Rule (potentially being kicked out of the APA) also isn’t drastic as it seems. The APA is a professional organization that publishes scientific journals, puts on conferences, and provides opportunities for continuing education. It’s not a medical licensing board. You can be kicked out of the APA and still practice psychiatryâ€. The Goldwater rule, then, does not apply to other mental health disciplines; here are some: Psychologists, Psychological examiners, Licensed Professional Counselors, Medical Psychotherapists, Associate School Psychologists, etc. I had licensures for the last four of that group.
Psychiatrists and other mental health workers are using another requirement to hold a license, “Need to Knowâ€, to inform about Trump’s behavior. Confidentiality with a patient is required, EXCEPT for “Need to Knowâ€. Should ANY licensed mental health worker believe the patient is a danger to him/herself or to others, the worker is REQUIRED to notify appropriate others.
One of the writers of “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, wrote this: (The Goldwater rule) “It doesn’t apply to psychologists, social workers, or New York Times columnist David Brooks. In February, a psychologist told me with deadly seriousness, ‘His is the worst case I have seen in my career,’ regarding Trump and a diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder.â€
I agree and would label his kind of narcissistic, as “Pathological Narcissismâ€, explained on page 57, and add another personality disorder, “Extreme Hedonism.†Page 27 (Philip Zimbardo and Rosemary Sword) : "Furthermore, through our observations, it was glaringly apparent, based on Zimbardo's time perspective theory (Zimbardo and Boyd 2009), later developed into time perspective therapy by Sword and Sword 2012), that Trump embodied a specific personality type: an unbridled, or extreme, present hedonist."

Our assertion that Trump qualifies as among the most extreme present hedonists we have every witnessed comes from the plethora of written and recorded material on him, including all his interviews, hundreds of hours of video, and his own tweets on his every personal feeling.
