Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World
« on: February 08, 2019, 09:15:50 pm »
Just spent an hour and a half watching and listening to this on PBS,and it was the best 90 minutes I have spent in years. I knew it was going to be good when it opened with Link Wray, and it didn't disappoint.

First off,I am 1/4 Tuscarora myself, but don't think for a minute that this influenced me. In fact, when the producers started trying to make the link because Indian chants/timing,and blues,I wasn't buying it at all. Thought it was pure PC BS. Then......,it started to click.

I watch everything I record, and immediately delete 99 percent of it. I didn't delete this one. I suspect I will watch it a few more times before it goes away.

Check your local PBS stations,or the main PBS page to find out when it airs where you are. You will be glad you did.

BTW,mods,I decided to put this in this mixed category instead of the music category because I honestly think it is a better fit here. Having said that, feel free to move it if you disagree.

Added to my watch list, thank you for the turn on.

BTW,for those of you who don't know who Link Wray was (he died a year or two ago) and have never heard the song "Rumble",consider the fact that Rumble is the ONLY song in the history of America that was banned from the airwaves that doesn't have lyrics. Not a one. Not even a grunt.

AND.......,I consider the album produced in the early 70's that is now out of print that has the title "Rumble" to be one of the top ten best albums ever printed in the US. I have no idea how the record company allowed it to go out of print. My current "Rumble" LP was bought several years ago from Germany, and cost me 125 bucks. If  you had any idea how cheap I am,you would be impressed. I had already worn out the first two I had bought,or I wouldn't have bought it.

If you want to hear the birth cries of Rock and Roll, you need to hear it. And "Yes,you CAN hear it on youtube," Or at least you could the last time I checked.

Just listened to it, I'll bite why was it banned? @sneakypete Nevermind, Wikipedia is your friend. The stations thought it would promote juvenile delinquency because the term "rumble" refers to a street fight and the harsh power chord the song used.

I'm no judge, I think part of Redbone is sort of Mexican American, XIT might have been more Native American but again, I don't know for certain.

@TomSea

I dunno, but I DO know that you have to be VEWWY,VEWWY careful who you try to discuss this with due to the racial sensitivity of the subject amongst some of those whose origins are from south of our border. There are a large chunk of those people who will insist they are Spanish/His or Her Panic, and they will want to fight you if you insist they are descendants of some "dirty Injuns" instead of directly descended from Castilian Don. Doesn't matter how brown they are or how black their eyes are, they are Spanish Caucasians, dammit!

I learned this right after I moved to Colorado from a friend everybody called "Mexican" (and it didn't offend him in the slightest),but who was probably at least 75 percent southwestern American Indian. There may have been a white man in the woodpile somewhere generations ago,but all evidence of him had long since disappeared. He warned me in a friendly way to be careful about referring to people Mexicans despite them speaking Spanish and looking just like stereotypical Mexicans. Truth to tell,I never really understood the difference or why anyone would be upset about it. It is what it is. Roll with the punches and move on with your life.

Then you sometimes run into another segment from South of the Border who want to insist their ancestors were members of American Indian tribes, and they want their reparations.

Seems like almost nobody wants to confess to being a Mexican, despite there not being one single damn thing being wrong about being born a Mexican,an American,a Chinaman,or anything else. Get back with me on this if you know of anyone who was given a choice before birth of what he or she would be,and I might be convinced to change my mind about this.

Who you ARE is who YOU MAKE YOURSELF OUT TO BE DUE TO YOUR OWN SELF-DETERMINATION. If you were born with brown skin and black eyes and think that is somehow shameful, that is on YOU,not ME.

A moment of confession here. I am 25 percent Tuscarora Indian, and the one group of people on the whole planet that I despise the most are "Reservation Indians" that do nothing but lay around on the reservation, getting high and drinking bootleg whiskey while waiting for their next checks to come in and bitching about "the white man".

I understand this situation has changed somewhat since the creation of tribal gambling casinos, but they are just higher paid parasites if they do nothing with the money the tribe pulls in from that other than spend it. Life is too short to spend it sitting on your asses. Get out and DO something interesting!
