Ex-Massachusetts gov rejoins GOP as he weighs Trump primary challenge
By Tal Axelrod - 02/05/19 12:21 PM EST

Former Gov. William Weld (R-Mass.) rejoined the Republican Party as he considers a primary challenge to President Trump in 2020.

Weld changed his party registration from Libertarian back to the GOP Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Weld served as The Bay State’s governor from 1991 until 1997. He later registered with the Libertarian Party and ran for vice president with former Gov. Gary Johnson (R-N.M.) in 2016.

Weld raised eyebrows last week when he told WMUR last week that he would discuss any presidential plans during an upcoming visit to New Hampshire.

“Bill Weld ran as a Libertarian candidate for vice president,” Stephen Stepanek, the chair of the New Hampshire GOP and the Trump campaign’s 2016 New Hampshire co-chair, told WMUR. “He’s a Libertarian and if he wants to run for president as a Libertarian, that’s fine. But we don’t want him back in the Republican Party.”

Former Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio) and Gov. Larry Hogan (R-Md.) are also considering primary challenges to Trump in 2020.

This guy's been bouncing back and forth between the GOP and the big-L's long before Trump. It's telling how little either party wants him... even in the ever-incompetent New York GOP.

Weld who?  This no name wants to run for president?  If I'm Trump, I would say welcome to the roast, yours pal!

I've forgotten the name of the Senator who denied this guy an ambassadorship or something. It was a big deal at the time when they had a direct confrontation at a committee hearing. It was a great moment.

Come on in, Gov. Weld - the water's fine!

It would be a doggone shame if no one challenges Trump for the GOP nomination.

Sure Skippy. You keep on dreaming your thoughts. Maybe the RINO Fairy will deliver for you this year.

I have no illusions that Gov. Weld could win the nomination.   But competition's a good thing;  it does no good to sail to re-nomination unopposed.   You may worship at the Donald's feet, but many of us have serious reservations about his ability to win in 2020 - especially when Trump's opponent is likely to be a socialist.   Trump needs to recognize that the GOP is a coalition,  and that the concerns of all members of that coalition need to be addressed.

My greatest fear is that the blindered folks who want no dissent to Trump's anointment are leading us down the path to a radicalized Democratic President.
