I wouldn't be so quick to condemn Trump for this move.  It kinda became inevitable.  I see it as a 'live to fight another day' thing.

Trump has not abandoned the wall and we will get it, but the government shutdown had begun to erode his popularity.

No, I don't think so.  It's a real nice dream, though.  One that I, myself, have had in the past.  But the reality is.... we here in Texas are already waaay too divided politically, thanks to the influx of leftist Democrats from other states and from illegals that eventually vote (illegally and otherwise) Democrat.  I just don't think succession is a viable alternative any more.   8888crybaby

I remember so many saying Trump was the oy one with the skills to negotiate for these things... But so far not only did he get nothing, this is a step backwards.

Even Bush was able to get the Secure Fence Act.
