Hoyer breaks with Pelosi, says he would welcome Trump on House floor for State of the Union
January 23, 2019 | BPR Wire |

Henry Rodgers, DCNF

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said he would be willing to allow President Donald Trump to give his State of the Union address on the House floor, breaking with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Fox News’ Neil Cavuto asked Hoyer if he’d be open to allowing Trump to address everyone in person.

“Sure,” Hoyer responded.

Cavuto then asked if he thought Pelosi would also allow Trump to give the speech on the House floor Jan. 29.

“Look, I don’t know what the discussions have been, so I don’t want to say,” Hoyer replied.

If he is that would indicate their polling shows SanFranNan's uninvitation isn't going over too well.

I have watched this go down all day both in writing and in seeing the news about it.  This is a winner for Pelosi and Hoyer (Hoyer will be for it by tomorrow).

Dems want the government open so federal employees can buy necessities to keep a family going until they can get a paycheck from their employer - Trump.

Republicans want the government open so federal employees can buy necessities to keep a family going until they can get a paycheck from their employer - Trump. (If you are a Republican and do not want federal employees to get their paycheck, then don't bother reading more of this.)

People will get two sound bites from this: One is Pelosi said, "OPEN THE GOVERNMENT! AND YOU CAN SPEAK IN THE HOUSE!

The second one is Trump saying, "I AM NOT OPENING THE GOVERNMENT UNTIL I GET WHAT I WANT AND YOU DO NOT GET WHAT YOU WANT!"

Trump shut down the government and only he can open it - kind of like being a dictator.  He has got to open the government as our airports and other areas that must be safe do not have enough employees coming in - those missing employees are at second jobs so they can take care of their family.

You can write what you want about this situation but employees need their money.

There are help wanted signs out all over the country. These lazy UNNECESSARY GOVT' EMPLOYEES and go get a real job in the private sector if not getting paid for sitting in their cubicles downloading porn is beneath them. I'll bet a nickle each and every one of these slugs couldn't get hired to a real job because they are unqualified to wipe their own asses.

Somewhere along the line people are going to realize a wall on the border is a good idea and Trump has been willing to include other items that the Rats said they were for. It's the Rats that haven't been willing to sit down and work this out. Now they Rats aren't going to allow the POTUS to speak to the nation from the House. No matter how much the media cover for them the Rats look like the ones having a temper tantrum.

The less left Rats have to know the American people are going to turn on them at some point.

No part of this shutdown is breaking in the Rats favor. There is no public outcry like there was in '96. You can't really gin up much sympathy for TSA workers and some azzhole who's only job is to read beer labels.

Departments like TSA can be replaced with quality security companies that will probably be more efficient. The people I feel for are the Coast Guard and Border Guards.

I really haven't noticed the shut down other than when I flew recently the TSA agents were nicer and the lines moved quicker. Maybe they realize the next step is to replace them if they can't do the job.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Democrats playing 'good cop/bad cop' and Stenny getting in a little power play for the future when he sees himself with that gavel.

The reality of the situation is that until some sort of bill comes out of the House (as revenue measures are Constitutionally required to do) and passes the Senate, Trump has no say in whether or not things get funded.

You can't put this on him unless they send him a Bill to veto. His stated intent to veto anything not including funding for a start on the wall, nonwithstanding, it is Congress which has not stepped up to the plate.

Of course you’re correct. But, we are in uncharted waters with social media, there’s barely a toe-hold on reality out there. In my circles all I hear repeatedly is a one line, implanted perception: Trump shut down the government. (I wonder where they get that idea from?)

Odds are, reality be damned and I can’t have a rational conversation from there, so it’s adios amigos.

I do put this on him.  Trump waiting till just days before the new Congress was sworn in.  He had 2 years with a majority in both houses when he should have pushed this.  Waiting till now is very suspect.

He called in the media to a meeting with Chuck and Nancy telling them he'd shut the government down.

He just caved to Nancy over giving the SOTU speech saying it would be given after the gov't reopens.

Congress has been 'bargaining' behind the scenes but Trump has brought tremendous focus onto this issue and onto himself.  He caves and doesn't get his wall, he's going to look like a complete incompetent idiot.  Hope and wishful thinking is making me give him the benefit of the doubt right now that he will prevail, but things aren't looking good.

I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.
