Trump Recognizes Guaido as Venezuela Leader, Challenging Maduro
By Margaret Talev and Andrew Rosati

President Donald Trump recognized Juan Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela minutes after the opposition leader declared himself the head of state, in the U.S.’s most provocative move yet against the leftist regime of Nicolas Maduro.

Guaido, 35, is the president of the Venezuela National Assembly, which Maduro doesn’t recognize.

“In its role as the only legitimate branch of government duly elected by the Venezuelan people, the National Assembly invoked the country’s constitution to declare Nicolas Maduro illegitimate, and the office of the presidency therefore vacant,” Trump said in a statement. “The people of Venezuela have courageously spoken out against Maduro and his regime and demanded freedom and the rule of law.”

I don't see any intervention from the US; but who knows?  Maybe someone else?  VZ is too big of a country and even if we did, in the long term, I don't know if they'd have any gratitude about it.

If Maduro is toppled, I think it will be Cuba's turn, next.

Juan Guaido: the 'survivour' challenging Venezuela's Maduro
Date created : 24/01/2019 - 00:57

Juan Guaido proudly calls himself a "survivor."  He will need to be: the bold young politician, head of Venezuela's opposition-controlled legislature, became public enemy number one when he declared himself interim president Wednesday, defying embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

Guaido did not set out to supplant Maduro, the socialist president who has presided over a spiraling political and economic crisis in Venezuela.

But the sometimes reserved 35-year-old was thrust to the front of the Venezuelan opposition when more senior leaders were forced from the scene -- some detained, some banned from politics and some pushed into exile.

Guaido brazenly called out Maduro as he took a revised oath of office before a crowd of thousands in Caracas, saying, "I swear to formally assume the national executive powers as acting president of Venezuela to end the usurpation, (install) a transitional government and hold free elections."

US President Donald Trump immediately recognized him as Venezuela's interim president, followed by a string of countries across the region. ...   More

Most of these banana opposition leaders tend to be about as bad as those they replace. The people just have no liberty freedom minds when it comes to politics. They love their socialism and misery.

If one reads history, back in the day, Colombia warmly welcomed Nixon back in '57(?) but it was Venezuela where anti-American hostility really came through... they really mobbed Nixon's VP car, that's one of the "Six Crises" he wrote about.

Sorry...

Caracas or Venezuela, horrible murder rate, apparently, higher than Brazil's... a place to be careful about. I suppose some sort of global coalition can pressure Venezuela. I don't think we will see any gunboat diplomacy or something like that.

There crime rate grew there after Chaves came into power, undoubtedly, they had problems before I'd think but nothing like now. I've seen graphs of how the murder rate skyrocketed and it seems mostly due to drugs.

Pretty cool history there Tom, thanks for sharing... Nixon looked pretty young there didn't he... and cool under pressure.

Too many people think they're entitled to someone else's property/work because it isn't fair. They vote to take it and then wonder what happened 10 years on. Even worse they never seem to learn the basic in your face lesson of it all. Envy and stupidity have consequences.

I do like this move by Trump's State Department.
No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

Juan Guaido is a 35-year old anti-regime activist who was a postgrad student at George Washington University that is closely-tied to the CIA and is a textbook example of an asset recruitment target

That weird silence from Democrats over Venezuela's massive rejection of socialism
By Monica Showalter

All over the world, nations and leaders are throwing expressions of support and praise for Venezuela's leaders and people, who after many years of oppression and missteps, have come together with a courageous plan to non-violently shake off a detested socialist dictatorship that has left their country in ruins. Television pictures from yesterday's demonstration covered the story in spades, showing the magnificent human spectacle to U.S. viewers.

President Trump and Vice President Pence have been right there for them. The Organization of American States and the Inter American Development Bank are loudly supporting them. The European Union is openly encouraging them.

There also are the skunks, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin's government, an official of which dismissed the millions-strong effort to shake off socialism and finally have food to eat, muggers in jail, a full roll of toilet paper and hospitals with sheets, running water and Band Aids as "an attempted coup.'

Then there are the Democrats, who are curiously, weirdly silent.  ...

What we can conclude from this is three things: That the collapse of socialism is an embarrassing topic for Democrats who are trying to sell it here. That supporting Maduro, as is this inclination, automatically puts them in the same camp as Vladimir Putin, the man they claim President Trump is in bed with. And three, it suggests that they'll do anything to oppose and undermine President Trump, even if that means throwing Venezuelans under the bus. No wonder they're too petrified to say anything.  ...

Look at the long & growing list of nations who recognize the legitimacy of President Guaido in #Venezuela.

Now compare that to the ones who still openly support Maduro:
- Cuba
- Turkey
- Russia
- Iran
- China
- Bolivia
- Nicaragua
