Ivanka Trump helping to pick US nominee for World Bank president

White House senior adviser and first daughter Ivanka Trump will help in the process to pick the next World Bank president.

According to White House Deputy Director of Communications Jessica Ditto, Trump was tapped by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to "help manage the U.S. nomination process as she’s worked closely with the World Bank’s leadership for the past two years."

Despite media reports from outlets including the Financial Times that Trump was a potential candidate for the U.S. nomination, Ditto said "reports that she is under consideration are false."

The reports resulted in backlash from Democrats, including Democratic donor Tom Steyer, who described the possibility as “ridiculous.”

“This is among the most ridiculous proposals I have ever heard,” Steyer tweeted last week. “Nepotism is just another form of corruption, so I am not surprised, but the level of absurdity is breathtaking.”

Trump has done some work with the World Bank, which provides loans to countries to help eliminate poverty and establish economic development. In 2017, she led the effort to launch the Women Entrepreneur Finance Initiative, which according to the Wall Street Journal has raised $300 million in commitments to fund financing programs for entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

Its current president, Jim Yong Kim, announced last week that he was leaving in February.
