Newly minted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday received a delivery of 10,000 roses, courtesy of an online fundraiser organized by liberal news site, DailyKos.
DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas said the fundraiser garnered enough donations from readers to fund the flower delivery in under two hours, The Washington Post reported.
The site, according to the Post, delivered a similar gift to Pelosi in 2010 to thank her for passing health care legislation.
Wednesday's effort raised enough money to buy 25,000 roses, the Post reported. The extras were shipped, at Pelosi's request, to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
“I’ve never seen so many roses in my life,†Pelosi said.
Moulitsas said the effort was successful because “people wanted to do something nice for once,†amid an often negative political climate.
The donation comes as Pelosi and fellow Democratic leaders are locked in a tense battle with President Trump over his demands to fund a wall along the U.S.–Mexico border.
Trump met with Pelosi and congressional leaders at the White House on Wednesday to discuss border security following his Tuesday night prime-time address where he made his case for the money. Trump called the meeting a "total waste of time."
Pelosi said Democrats intend to push through with their plan to send four separate spending bills to the Senate over the next three days in an attempt to reopen the government, which has been in a partial shutdown since Dec. 22.
