Fascist Christmas ‘Greeting’ Outrages Croatian Serbs
Anja Vladisavljevic

Serb MPs in Croatia expressed anger after a ruling party member and lawmaker’s son posted an Orthodox Christmas message on Facebook showing a fascist Ustasa fighter holding a Serb soldier’s severed head.

Croatian Serb MPs Milorad Pupovac and Boris Milosevic criticised the ruling Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ party on Tuesday for tolerating hate speech against Serbs, after one of its members posted an offensive anti-Serb Orthodox Christmas message on Facebook.

Ivan Djakic, the son of HDZ MP Josip Djakic, posted a private Facebook message on Monday with a photograph of a World War II fascist Ustasa movement fighter holding the severed head of a Serb soldier, with the message “Happy Christmas to all Serb ‘friends’”.

Pupovac told a press conference in Zagreb that the fact that state officials have remained quiet about intolerance in the country “allowed this young man to send this type of message”. He said he will file a criminal complaint against Ivan Djakic.
