Ohio Heartbeat Bill Goes Down in Flames after GOPs Side with Kasich, Planned Parenthood, and Democrats
By Paula Bolyard December 27, 2018

Ohio's "heartbeat bill," which would have prohibited killing unborn children with a detectable heartbeat, went down in flames on Thursday after the Senate failed by one vote to override Gov. Kasich's heartless veto of the bill.

The bill passed both chambers earlier this month — the House by a comfortable majority and the Senate 18-13 — but Kasich followed through on his promise to veto the bill. In Ohio, a three-fifths majority is required to override a veto, which meant that two additional votes were needed in the Senate.

The Ohio House voted earlier today to override Kasich's veto 61-28, but the measure came up one vote short in the Senate, which voted 19-13 against the override. Sen. Frank LaRose, who was absent for the vote on the bill earlier this month, voted to override, but GOP Sen. Bill Beagle, who voted for the heartbeat bill, inexplicably defected, crossing the aisle to side with Democrats, Kasich, and Planned Parenthood, all of whom had campaigned vigorously against protecting the lives of unborn children. Beagle was joined by four Republicans — John Eklund, Matt Dolan, Stephanie Kunze, and Gayle Manning — to block the override attempt.

He signed one bill which gives Ohio very restrictive abortion measures but vetoed the heartbeat bill. His reasoning was that the heartbeat bill would have been defeated in court anyway, thus, this way saves that expense. It is up for each of us to decide if that way of thinking has any merit. I posted this in the life news section. Live action news praised him for the bill he did sign.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich signs one of the nation's most restrictive abortion bans; vetoes 'heartbeat bill'
Jessie Balmert, Cincinnati Enquirer Published 3:06 p.m. ET Dec. 21, 2018 | Updated 3:26 p.m. ET Dec. 21, 2018

COLUMBUS - Ohio Gov. John Kasich just signed one of the most restrictive abortions bans in the nation.

And it wasn't the "heartbeat bill."

On Friday, Kasich signed Senate Bill 145, which would ban a common second-trimester abortion procedure called dilation and evacuation and penalize doctors who perform them. Physicians could face a fourth-degree felony, punishable by up to 18 months in prison, for the procedure.

The proposal, which would ban most abortions as early as 12 weeks gestation, has no exception for rape or incest but does allow for an abortion to save a woman's life.

Live Action is happy about this, at least, the bill he signed.

The Latest: Kasich abortion bill veto could set up showdown
By - Associated Press - Friday, December 21, 2018
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Latest on two pending Ohio abortion bills (all times local):

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) has vetoed for a second time an abortion bill that would have imposed one of the most far-reaching abortion restrictions in the nation.

In a veto message Friday, the outgoing Republican said the so-called heartbeat bill banning the procedure at the first detectable fetal heartbeat is unconstitutional. He said enacting it would prompt a costly and unsuccessful court battle.

Kasich signed a second abortion bill he’d been sent that outlaws dilation and evacuation abortions. That is a common second-trimester abortion method. Similar laws have been rejected by the courts.

They missed overriding the veto by only one vote.

That speaks very very well of Ohio that it should be that close.

  • That is the problem with everything. They try and make it better without realizing the old is fine.
