Defense Secretary James Mattis wanted us to stay in Paris accord. Trump said no. Mattis wanted us to stay in the Iran deal. Trump said no. Mattis wanted less pressure on NATO. Trump said no. I don't suspect any of this is true. It's stuff being made up by the Trump campaign to smear someone who was otherwise widely respected before he dared walk out on Trump.

Except he only offered to stay until the end of February to allow for a thorough search, vetting, and confirmation of his replacement. If it happened before then, fine. Trump was fine with it, until commentators remarked what a full volume blast the letter was. It’s similar to how he was fine with a CR through February, until commentators embarrassed him.
