Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has appointed Rep. Martha McSally to fill the Senate vacancy orginally created by the death of Sen. John McCain.
Sen. Jon Kyl, a Republican, was picked to succeed McCain on an interim basis. McSally, who lost a bid for Senate in November, is to receive the appointment to McCain's seat after Kyl departs, with the expectation that she would stand for election in a special election in 2020.
McSally, 52, is a retired Air Force colonel and in 1991 became the first female U.S. pilot to fly combat missions.
Ducey said in a statement: "With her experience and long record of service, Martha is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizona’s interests in the U.S. Senate. I thank her for taking on this significant responsibility."
