NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The United Nations human rights office on Thursday said Burundi's government has asked it to leave, months after the outgoing U.N. rights chief called the country one of the "most prolific slaughterhouses of humans in recent times."

Spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani in Geneva confirmed they received a letter on Wednesday "requesting us to close the office. We of course regret this decision and we would like to continue our cooperation with Burundi."

She declined to comment further, calling the issue sensitive. Sources within the U.N. office in Burundi told The Associated Press they were given two months to leave. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

Burundi denies running secret torture houses

Burundi's authorities have dismissed a BBC investigation into alleged secret torture sites as "fake news".

The BBC Africa Eye report said the government was running secret detention houses to silence dissent.

It showed footage, widely shared on social media, of blood flowing from the drain of a house in the capital.

Prosecutor General Nyandwi Sylvestre maintained that the blood came from goats slaughtered to mark the Muslim festival of Eid.`
