Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen to face sentencing for campaign finance violations, lying to Congress

A sentencing hearing for Michael Cohen is underway at a Manhattan federal courthouse, and attorneys representing the former personal attorney and fixer for President Donald Trump are making their case for leniency from the judge.

 Prosecutors in the Justice Department’s Southern District of New York charged Cohen with eight felony counts in August, including tax evasion, making false statements to a financial institution, and campaign finance violations. Special counsel Robert Mueller, tasked with investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, tacked on an additional count of lying to Congress last month.

Cohen has pleaded guilty to all nine counts.

Not a bad sentence though.  Nine counts including tax evasion, could have meant far more prison time. 

Cohen was going to prison no matter what.  The question was, for how long?   

Wondering where Cohen will serve his sentence.  Club Fed?  He's not a violent criminal. 

Cohen blames Trump for his misfortune, but as the judge said, Cohen should have known better.  What is it about Trump that makes people want to do dirty deeds for him?

True.  But I think that's a symptom of a real disease in this country.  People are now so willing to discard their character and morals for money and celebrity.

Agreed.  Of the nine charges, most were NOT related to Trump:  "tax evasion, making false statements to a financial institution, and campaign finance violations".

There is one more in the Mueller investigation for false statements before Congress. Nevertheless, this was a person who described himself as being a fixer and Ray Donovan type character. He knew exactly what he was doing. Nobody else made him become ‘dark,’ - he already was.

SDNY prosecutors got very frustrated with him, because they likely have circumstantial evidence he could corroborate on other figures involved with his taxi scheme. We know Cohen has Ukrainian family members and has known Felix Sater, since high school. This is pure supposition on my part, but I think he is protecting family members from some potentially dangerous people.
