Cambridge student, from Italy. Something happened and it looks like the police or secret police probably offed him.

Did Egyptian Secret Agents Torture Cambridge Student Giulio Regeni or Was He Set Up?

An Italian doctoral student was found dead near Cairo and several agents have been named as prime suspects. Investigators want to know if his Cambridge adviser may have set him up.

ROME—In a murder case shrouded in secrecy and steeped in sometimes outrageous conspiracy theories, one thing remains clear: Italian Ph.D. candidate Giulio Regeni died a slow and excruciating death. He was beaten, burned, and tortured for days before his mangled body was discarded like trash in a Cairo suburb in 2016.

Article above has a paywall, the next story does not. Regini, the student, must have done something that appeared subversive to the government to the best of my recollection, this has been in the news for some time.

Italy's foreign minister has summoned Egypt's ambassador and urged Cairo to respect its commitment to move quickly and bring to justice those responsible for the murder of Giulio Regeni.

In a statement released Friday, the Italian foreign ministry said there was "strong disquiet" in Rome over the way the case was being handled.

Regeni, a 28-year-old Italian PhD student, was killed in Cairo in January 2016 and despite months of cooperation between Egyptian and Italian prosecutors, no one has been arrested or charged in relation to the killing.
