Firing over their heads won't prevent someone 'back there' from getting hit--up to a mile+ away.

Fright involves the threat of pain, but it is going to be difficult to get that across without hurting someone.
Those optics will be front page worldwide, especially if they are already doing the fake news thing with the pictures.

For the most part I agree with most here, you're a bonehead, but a warning shot or two (as you suggested) is fine in my book. How do you stop an invasion, you give fair warning then shoot a few in the head and a few more if needed until they get the point. I ain't going to play the PC game like some do here. This is an invasion, to heck with playing nice.

In the long run, it will save lives, instead of them crossing in the middle of the desert and dying, they will understand that the border is guarded and either go home (due to no easy passage) or attempt riskier options. But for most, it will end their foolish game with the MSM cameras.

A little girl from Honduras stares into the camera, her young features contorted in anguish. She’s barefoot, dusty, and clad only in a diaper and T-shirt. And she’s just had to run from clouds of choking tear gas fired across the border by U.S. agents.

A second photograph, which also circulated widely and rapidly on social media, shows an equally anguished woman frantically trying to drag the same child and a second toddler away from the gas as it spreads.

The three were part of a much larger group, perhaps 70 or 80 men, women and children, pictured in a wider-angle photo fleeing the tear gas. Reuters photographer Kim Kyung-Hoon shot the images, which provoked outrage and seemed at odds with President Trump’s portrayal of the caravan migrants as “criminals” and “gang members.”

Trump officials said that authorities had to respond with force after hundreds of migrants rushed the border near Tijuana on Sunday, some of them throwing “projectiles” at Customs and Border Protection personnel.

Along with the basic rule, never pull a gun unless you intend to use it, how long do you think it would take for even these third worlers to figure out the guns are an empty threat?

Firing live rounds around large numbers of people is a very good way to hit some of them, and should only be done if deaths from the rounds are acceptable.   If they aren’t, don’t fire.  Find some other way.

Mr. @Dexter has little or no experience with firearms. In the opening salvos of Desert Storm, Saddam had his troops fire everything they had into the air to counter allied airstrikes. Thousands of Iraqis were killed by falling shrapnel from their own troops. All of that ordnance they sent into the air, came back down with a vengeance. If you fire 'over the heads' of a crowd that large, all that will happen is that you will wind up killing the people in the back of the line. The technical term is called 'trajectory'.

I was in the army for 4 years. I didn't have a combat MOS but I learned a thing or two about crowd control and forcing people to comply through fear. Don't act like there's incredibly high chances of people being killed if rounds are fired intelligently with the purpose of causing fear. Yeah, it could happen, but guess what? This isn't going to get solved with tear gas. It will be worse next time.

How short the media’s memory is. During Obama’s administration there were hundreds of documented instances of tear gas used on the southern border in the exact manner it’s being used here to quell disturbances.

I guess when Obama used it the media considered tear gas a humane use of deterrent force. But, that was then...and this is Trump.
