It doesn't help that environmentalists in South America keep getting murdered.

Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest is at its worst level in a decade, Brazilian officials announced Friday, amid concerns that logging in the world’s largest forest will only increase once the country’s anti-environment president-elect, Jair Bolsonaro, takes office.

Between August 2017 and July 2018 some 7,900 square kilometers (3,050 square miles) of rainforest were cleared, 13.7% higher than the previous period, according to figures from Brazil’s environment ministry.

According to Greenpeace Brazil, the figures mean approximately 1.185 billion trees were brought down. That’s an area equivalent to 987,500 soccer fields or 5.2 times the sprawling city of São Paulo, which has a population of more than 12 million.

Right, well, it still shouldn't be turned into farmland I think.

Why?  Shouldn't the people that live there be able to use their land to feed themselves?

Why?

An incredible amount of life would be lost forever if it was destroyed. Does that mean nothing to you? And there's not a good way of knowing how many locals want to save it because the people that want to cut it down keep murdering outspoken environmentalists.

The Amazon is some of the last true wilderness left in the world. An incredible amount of life would be lost forever if it was destroyed. Does that mean nothing to you? People are more important than any animal.  If the people that live there need the land to produce food then that's what they should do.

What if it's less of a need and more of a want? People want to make money. You also said nothing of the people being murdered. A lot of people aren't okay with this.

False.

Native Americans shaped their environments to suit them, through burning, pruning, tilling and other practices. And the Amazon is no different: Look closer, and you can see the deep impressions that humans have made on the world's largest tropical rainforest, scientists reported in the journal Science.

What happened in the past is not the same as leveling thousands and thousands of miles of the Amazon with no end in sight. This will eventually lead to the complete destruction of the Amazon.

Seems pretty clear, based on the research that the Amazon forest is man made based on what they needed at the time.  Why should man not keep remaking it?

If you want to stand on the side of an issue with Greenpeace, you go right ahead.

I think you're misinterpreting something. Those unproven hypotheses suggest that man had a large impact on the plant biodiversity in the Amazon. They're not saying people created the entire Amazon. Either way, it's cool to just tear it all down?

How many times do you want me to answer the same question?  It would be great if the forest could be preserved, but if the people that live there need the land in a new way, then they should shape the land into what they need.

I never understood the liberal mindset that wants to live in a modern world but force other people to stay undeveloped so they can feel good about something they will never see or visit.

Fortunately, it is none of our business.

I used to watch Captain Planet every morning. I don't remember anything about communism. There was a whole bunch of nonsense about respecting and preserving nature.

How many times over the history of our planet has something been completely destroyed never to be seen again? Quit trying to keep third world countries third world countries so that you can watch how pretty the Amazon is on Nat Geo.

From IMDB:

"Gaia, the spirit of the planet, assembles a diverse team of "planeteers," who are able to combine their powers to summon an elemental warrior that takes on the appearance of superhero Captain Planet. He works with the planeteers to defend Earth from pollution caused by criminals and villains. As the show's theme song says, Captain Planet is "gonna take pollution down to zero" by defeating the villains, who include the likes of Hoggish Greedly, Dr. Blight and Looten Plunder. The animated series was co-created by media mogul Ted Turner, a noted environmentalist."

So, Ted Turner.  Yep, communist.
