Can Gov. John Kasich veto Ohio’s ‘heartbeat’ and stand your ground’ bills?

Here's how -- and when -- Ohio's governor could veto two controversial bills, as well as how state lawmakers could override his veto.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—In the waning days of the current legislative session, the Ohio House this week has passed two high-profile bills that Gov. John Kasich is expected to veto should they reach his desk.

With all the talk about potential vetoes of the “heartbeat bill” abortion ban and the “stand your ground” bill regarding use of force in self-defense, it’s worth examining some common questions about Kasich’s veto power, how the process works, and how things might play out before the current legislative session ends next month and Kasich leaves office in January.

If that happens and Kasich vetoes both bills, it appears that the Ohio House, at least, has the 60 votes needed to override his vetoes. (The “stand your ground” bill got 65 “yes” votes, while the “heartbeat bill” got 60 votes).
