See how much of California has burned in the last five years

It's a lot.
By Sara Chodosh November 13, 2018

In August we wrote that California was experiencing it’s largest fire on record and created a map to show just how much of the state had burned in the preceding five years. Now, just a few months later, we’re updating because November has brought the Golden State its deadliest and most destructive fires ever.

Even back in August this was already the worst fire season since 2008. Now blazes have destroyed the entire town of Paradise, countless beach homes in and around Malibu, and a record 42 deaths. 200 are still missing. The Camp, Hill, and Woolsey fires have burned more than 190,000 acres collectively so far.

Compare that to the map shown here, and dryness doesn't necessarily coincide with the number and/or intensity of the fires. https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA

That would tend to indicate that other factors (such as fuel load from poor management or even arson) come into play, contributing to the severity of the past few years.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
