10 American Treasures: A Very Personal and Subjective list
By Frank Hawkins

Rush Limbaugh is worried about threats to our country including the fact that young Americans are not taught about American exceptionalism. His point is Democrats not only don’t believe in the ideals that made America great, they believe America is the problem. At one point President Obama argued that America is not exceptional. And remember that NY Governor Cuomo had the unbelievable audacity to say America was never that great.

They and other Democrats are deliberately ignoring so much, including America’s rich trove of treasures ranging from the seemingly trivial to the globally important, made up of wonderful, talented people, great products and businesses and institutions that make our country exceptional. Going through even my very limited list makes it clear just how exceptional we are. Suggest any kind of list, of course, and everyone will have something different. That’s what makes it interesting and underscores the point. Here’s my personal list of 10 American treasures that make a difference to me and in some cases, to the entire country.

Valley Forge

It’s impossible to visit and not feel this is truly sacred ground.

I visited more than 40 years ago.  Of all the historic sites I've visited over the years, Valley Forge made the greatest impact on me emotionally and that memory has lasted. The feeling is still strong today.   I have tied to explain it many times, but don't have words.

I'm surprised that the frying of the chicken did not make the list.

The list is concentrated in the East, like the big government and big media.

Plenty of big things, to list out West.

American history started in the east. The Revolutionary War, the Civil War - pretty much eastern. Having said that, I disagree with most of this writer's choices. FOX News and Apple are not American treasures by any stretch of the imagination. Natural wonders like the Grand Canyon and the Alaskan mountains (Denali, McKinley, whatever you want to call it) deserve props.

How about adding former countries Texas, California to statehood, then?

How about adding former territories, Hawaii and Alaska to statehood then?

Pony Express? Transcon railroad?

No disagreement from me. The list is subjective, no doubt. I think we all have better choices.

Yes, I know about the eastern beginning. But I have studied my family history and that of the country, too.

I have a g-grandfather, that sailed from New England, around South America to the California Gold Rush.

He failed to find his fortune, headed back east. Next he went West again, to Minnesota, where he settled.

From the departures from England and Sweden, my ancestors were moving West, every generation.

And my ancestors were wrapped up in it since the Mayflower landed.  What will I tell them when they ask me about what we did with what they gave us?

Not sure why you are posting about your family being in the moving business considering the thread topic, but since you did can you get me a quote on moving a bedroom suite from ID to PA? I found a cool Mid-Century Danish set on Ebay I am interested in purchasing....

Great pic, Frank Cannon.

I remember in the early 1950's, hanging out on the corner of Rt 1 in Norwalk (CT), while my mom was shopping in the A&P nearby (it was a "supermarket" then, but it was actually the size of a Dollar Store today). Since i95 hadn't been built, all the trucks still went up and down "The old Post Road" between New York and Boston. And they had lots of license plates on 'em, just like your movin' van!

Yeah. I remember that. I'm not in the trucking business, but I don't recall seeing the 58 plates on a rig for a while. I guess you don't have to do that anymore. I guess the states have better ways to gouge trucks from out of state.
