Incoming Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler: Democrats 'far from’ considering impeachment

Incoming House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., reiterated Sunday that Democrats are not considering holding impeachment proceedings for President Trump, at least not anytime soon.

“No,” Nadler said on CNN’s "State of the Union" when asked if Democrats would start proceedings after they take control of the House in January.

“Impeachment is a question that will come up down the road maybe, depending on findings of the Mueller [investigation],” Nadler said. “We’re far from that right now.”

Instead, Nadler said the first thing he wants to do is “protect the Mueller investigation” into Russian interference and potential collusion with the then-candidate Trump’s presidential campaign.

Following that, Nadler said the first witness he hopes to call before the committee is acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker who Trump put in the spot after firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions one day after the midterm elections. "Our very first witness after January 3rd, we will subpoena -- or we will summon, not necessarily subpoena — Mr. Whitaker," said Nadler.

Democrats have decried Whitaker's appointment to the post, warning that the firing of Sessions puts the country on the brink of a constitutional crisis.
