Russia faces loss of Admiral Kuznetsov, its only aircraft carrier, after crane mishap

Accident leaves 5m hole in ageing ship

Russia could be without an aircraft carrier for the first time in more than four decades after an accident during repairs in the Arctic left a hole in its flight deck.

Admiral Kuznetsov was damaged after the floating dock where it was being worked on sank last week, causing a 70-tonne crane to crash on to the vessel, killing one person and critically injured two others. Russian officials have downplayed the damage to the ship, but admit that the crane tore a 5m (16ft) hole in its deck. A week after the accident near Murmansk, pictures that emerged yesterday showed the crane still lying on the flight deck.

This should really put stuff into perspective for some people when it comes to our military might compared to other nations. Russia might lose its ONE aircraft carrier that it built almost 30 years ago. Can you guess how many the Chinese have? One, and it's currently incomplete. How about the U.S? We have a modest 11 super aircraft carriers, each more powerful and advanced than any other carrier on Earth. Oh, and our number of carriers, 11, is more than the combined number of carriers from all other nations on Earth, and 2 more are under construction. We've also decommissioned 55 aircraft carriers, all of which were approximately as advanced as what a lot of other nations actively keep as their 1 carrier.

The Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrying cruiser was damaged after a floating dry dock holding the ship for repairs suddenly began to sink due to power supply failure. Because the dry dock tilted while it was sinking, one of its cranes fell onto the vessel's deck, damaging it as a result.

"The crane that fell left a hole 4 by 5 meters. But at the same time […] these are structures that are repaired easily and quickly," Rakhmanov told reporters on Tuesday, adding that the repair would cost little.

A spokesman for the repair plant where the vessel is docked told Sputnik that because parts of the deck were dissembled for repair and upgrade, the fallen crane dealt more damage to the equipment rather than the deck itself.
