The homemade device that a man who allegedly carried a 45-year grudge left in front of the Nederland police station in 2016 was crafted with a highly unstable explosive compound that could have been lethal, FBI bomb experts testified in federal court Wednesday.
The testimony by FBI bomb technicians Garrett Gumbinner and Raleigh Parrott came during the opening of a two-day sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Denver for David Michael Ansberry, 66, who previously pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to ignite a weapon of mass destruction. Ansberry admitted he planted an explosive device at the station.
Ansberry built a bomb capable of demolishing the Nederland police station in order to avenge the vigilante killing of a fellow member of a 1970s-era hippie gang called the STP Family, according to court records. In 1971, Nederland Marshal Renner Forbes killed Guy “Deputy Dawg†Gaughnor. Forbes confessed to the killing in 1997, three years before his death. He wasn’t prosecuted.

The article above does say, versus the reputation of other "hippies", they had a reputation for violence, so that explains things some.
