The failure of the socialist state has left many Venezuelans in poverty and rampant starvation. Indeed, Maduro has used widespread hunger to solidify his control of the country.
While the rest of the world knows about the human rights abuses being perpetrated by Maduro, it is less known that his government is receiving outside assistance. According to the White House, Cuba has been instrumental in helping Maduro retain and expand his power.
Trump Administration Targeting CubaThe White House plans to unveil a strategy to apply pressure on the Cuban government for its efforts to undermine democracy and prop up Maduro. A senior administration official told McClatchy’s DC Bureau: “The issue of Cuban involvement in Venezuela is a fact. It’s not a theory.â€
Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, said that 22,000 Cubans have infiltrated the Venezuelan government and are serving in security and intelligence agencies. “They occupy important positions in several Venezuelan government agencies, and particularly in security services such as the Bolivarian intelligence services,†he said.
