How and when did the United States become such a terrible place to live?

I have lived in the United States, where I was born, and have lived in what are called “Third World†countries for fifteen years of my life.
I think I am qualified to say that the United States is NOT a “terrible place to live.†I have been frisked several times just because I was there; I have had uniformed officials come up to me and demand my “papers.†I have been threatened with jail time, and I have been shot at twice, and had a mob surround me with violence on their minds, also twice.
And none of those things happened in the United States.
