I drive, everyday.   I am willing to pay higher gas taxes if dedicated to maintaining the roads and bridges that let me get to work, to the Jersey Shore,  and elsewhere.

I find it hard to believe that anyone believes it is not a proper function of government to maintain public roads.   The Constitution's commerce clause clearly permits a federal role,  for there's few things that grease the wheels of interstate commerce more than our system of roads.

And what form of taxation is more fair than a tax on users of public facilities?    A gas tax won't impact you, @RoosGirl , if you don't drive.   If you do,  then be willing to pay for services that government provides you that allow you to get where you need to go.

We're not talking socialism here, folks, with the many being taxed for social schemes that benefit the few.    User fees - which is essentially what a gas tax is - were contemplated by the Founders.    You drive,  you benefit from the roads, you help pay for their upkeep.    That's as conservative a notion of fair and equitable taxation as I can think of.

You're finding it hard to believe because no one is saying that. We're saying we already pay the taxes and don't want to pay them again.

Amen! If anything he should be proposing lowering the gas tax (this is an election year) and proposing fixing our infrastructure.

In doing so, it would create more jobs.  The $$ is there...and while at it ... take some of the $$ and build the dang wall!!!

Similar logic used here when they build tollways.
They start out with a low fee, and they tell us when the road is done being paid for, the toll will go away.
Because of the cost, people start driving on them less.
In their infinite wisdom, they keep raising the tolls, just charging fewer and fewer people more money.
Of course, the tolls never go away, even when the roads are paid for 100 times over.

I don't know why people fall for those lies over and over again, that the tolls will go away after they're paid for.  It sounds good, but they're never done being paid for.  There's always maintenance to pay for.

Then you pay them and stop demanding the rest of us pony up even MORE money that government has already misappropriated, spent or otherwise stolen and pocketed for other shit than using the funds already being collected in gas and other road taxes that were 'said' to be used for infrastructure repair.

Notwithstanding tolls, stickers, license fees and other shit already being collected and pocketed.

Not one more dime.

Let them figure out how to use the billions already being collected from us to 'fix' all the shit they have ignored so they can pocket it and spend it on graft and reelections.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

Are you saying the cost of maintaining roads shouldn't be borne by those who use roads?    You want to spread the costs to those who don't, or just pass the buck to the next generation?

It is entirely consistent with conservatism to fund a legitimate expense of government both currently and by levies targeted to those who make use of roads.
Well let's talk about California, which I am sure is not atypical, we already paid a heavy gas tax which the democraps(I include Schwartzhole) played three card monty shuffling to other places to shore up their socialist programs instead of the roads. Then there are the Hybrids that weigh just as much as a conventional car causing just as much wear and tear on the roads as conventional cars and of course use less gas so don't pay their fair share........on top of being subsidized by the taxpayer. Then of course there are the electric vehicle that the Gaia worshipers love to claim are zero emission, which again are just as heavy as conventional gas vehicles, and they pay no share at all for maintaining the roads, are subsidized by the taxpayer and in many case are supplied with free electricity at public charging stations  paid for by........surprise, the taxpayer.

Now governor Moonbeam and his socialista democrats laid another huge gas tax on California for...........INFRASTRUCTURE! (my ass) while not addressing the Gaia worshippers driving Hybrids and EV's and throwing billions into social programs for illegals and a bullet train to nowhere.

I guess we'll see what the public will tolerate after the election and the measure to tell Moonbeam and his posse to shove his gas tax into the dark side of the moon.

Me I'm fed up to the gills with do gooders telling me to fork over more and more .........for the children...........for the roads.............for the Earth........kill Em All and Let God Sort it out. I want the America I grew up in Back not the  888tapping cat ified country the flower children and socialists have turned it into.

True, and my point being, how often does any tax ,fee, toll, etc., ever go away after it has been inacted?

And that is money that the states should and could generate on their own via state budgets and not take "freebies" from the Federal government.

Sorry, Bud...that boat sailed in 1865.
