I heard that 18 of the dead were all in the stretch limo, which I also heard was a Chevy Suburban "stretched out", probably by welding in a middle section.

18 (or more?) people in a single vehicle, let's see -- figure 175lbs x 18 = 3,150lbs.
1.5 -tons- of passengers.

I'm wondering how structurally sound that stretched limo actually was (Suburban or not) to be carrying that kind of weight inside.

I'm also wondering if there was a mechanical failure, most likely brakes. I believe there's a downgrade coming up to the stop sign in question.

I've been -on- that road (Rt. 30), but's it been quite a few years...

Four sisters and their husbands were among the 20 people killed in a horrific limousine crash in upstate New York on Saturday.

The group were on their way to a surprise 30th birthday party when the 2001 Ford Excursion limousine lost control and careened through an intersection before hitting a parked car in a crash that 'sounded like an explosion.'

The crash killed all 18 people in the white limousine, including the driver, and two pedestrians. All 20 victims were adults.

The article posted by FreeVulcan still had no actual pics of the crashed limo itself.

Watch for a new law (at least in NY state) limiting the use of such limos and limiting the number of persons who can occupy any vehicle at one time.

Shahed â€œMalikâ€ Hussain, whose undercover work for the FBI has been controversial, testified over the course of several weeks during the ongoing trial of four Newburgh men standing trial for a terrorism plot. Hussainâ€™s role in that sting operation came under fire recently from defense attorneys who, during their cross-examinations of the governmentâ€™s star witness, pried at Hussainâ€™s finances, conflicting statements, murky background and his previously unknown criminal history in Pakistan. The case is on schedule for closing arguments this week.

Meanwhile, lawyers for two Albany men convicted in 2006 of money laundering in support of terrorism said they are closely examining whether Hussainâ€™s testimony in the Newburgh case is in conflict with his testimony at the trial in Albany four years ago. They say the government never disclosed the fact Hussain had been arrested twice for murder in Pakistan. I heard on news, that the vehicle had failed safety inspection, and had been placed on eBay for sale.

This Jussain guy is probably a very unscrupulous operator, and needs to be an example.
