Reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty, a Southern California Catholic church is looking to build a 40 ft. statue of the Virgin Mary on the border that will effectively serve as a beacon drawing illegal immigrants to America.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in San Ysidro is working to raise $1 million for the statue, which will be called “Welcome the Stranger,” KGTV reported. The Virgin Mary will also hold a torch, similar to the New York City landmark.
