McConnell calls for investigation into leak of Ford letter

The battle over Brett Kavanaugh isn't over: Its next chapter may be a Senate investigation into how the public first learned of Christine Blasey Ford's July letter alleging he sexually assaulted her.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told POLITICO on Saturday that the Judiciary Committee "ought to take a look at" the initial media report of Ford's letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), laying out her assault claim against Kavanaugh. That media report included no details of Ford's allegation, describing its topic as "an incident involving Kavanaugh and a woman while they were in high school."

But Republicans have seized on the public disclosure of the letter which the judge's accuser had asked to remain confidential.  "I think It clearly was, honestly, a despicable thing to do to Dr. Ford," McConnell said. "And it kind of underscored the tactics that have been used: It started in committee and then went straight out into the public.”

Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has asked Ford's lawyers to turn over any communications they had with the offices of Feinstein or Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) about the California-based professor's claim against Kavanaugh. But Grassley said in an interview that he hasn't yet decided how much further he should pursue an inquiry into how Ford's letter reached the public eye.

Apparently McConnell is not ready to let this go and he shouldn't.  This was a crime against humanity and against our system of fairness and justice.  I want to see some consequences.

McConnell is the Majority Leader, at least until January.  He can do more than just "call for an investigation."  Until he does more, this is just preening.

Kavanaugh isn't just a SCOTUS nominee.

He is every man, woman, and child among us.

"Senator Grassley's relatively recent expressed assurances to President Trump that he will make time for hearings on a replacement Attorney General are a strong indication that the GOPe now sees their lot linked to President Trump -- including in the Russia Hoax, which is the focus of the President's anger with Jeff Sessions. Other factors may make such hearings unnecessary, but Grassley's statement in that regard are to me a strong indication, as Grassley is unlikely to have spoken in such a way about a sitting Republican AG without some consensus of Republican senators behind him."
