Schumer: Democrats might change Senate rules to require 60 votes for Supreme Court nominees
by Al Weaver
 | October 02, 2018 03:41 PM

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer indicated Tuesday that Senate Democrats could decide to move the threshold for confirming a Supreme Court justice back to 60 votes, instead of today's simple majority, if Democrats retake the majority in November.

When asked by a reporter Tuesday if Democrats might make that change, the New York Democrat said his conference would "have to look at that."

"The bottom line is that the Republican leader moved it down ... and the bottom line is that we'll have to look at that should we get back into the majority," Schumer said during his weekly press conference.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., changed the rules in 2017 to allow Justice Neil Gorsuch and future Supreme Court nominees to advance to a final vote with a 51-vote majority, instead of the 60-vote supermajority that had been in place.

McConnell's move came four years after then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid lowered the same cloture threshold for lower court nominees to 51 votes, known as the "nuclear option," in order to bypass a GOP blockade on nominees.

How?

This is talk based on the delusion that they will control the Senate in the new Congress.  Right now it's looking like they may lose seats in North Dakota and Missouri, since the sex-accusation ambush is not playing well in the heartland. (And polling in ND has women tilting GOP as well as men.)
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

Dems don't play by rules.

It is why, after the scheduled committee hearing for Kavanaugh finished, all of the sudden a letter that was sat on for weeks came forth.

They only know that they need to win to have power, and do so any way they can, to harassing politicians in restaurants, to paying for protesters, to maybe slipping the bribe out openly for pro-bono work.  http://www.gopbriefingroom.com/index.php/topic,334578.msg1809540.html#msg1809540

I guess the dems think if they win the senate they can peel off enough squishy pubbies to change the rules?

Did the democrats gain the majority while I wasn't looking?

It is to be expected that the Democommies have to presume they will win in November and that they will shut down anything through the Senate while Trump remains president.  As it is, the Senate has done next to nothing for two years, so it will be pretty much the status quo regardless who is the majority in the Senate.

But hear me now, the GOP will gain seats in the Senate this November.  I predict they gain a net of four seats, still short of the 60 they need to do anything, but a stronger position than where they are at present.

So nobody ever gets confirmed, and one by one, the court dwindles.  Pretty soon we will be down to Ruth Bader Ginsburg in charge of the entire judicial branch.

How?

And why, assuming they held at best a small majority?

Would they make this change, in order to diminish their own power?

No worries.  Suppose worst case scenario, that Kavanaugh is booted.  I think this would be one more push to awaken the Republicans to turn out and vote in record numbers.

I anticipate a net gain of four GOP seats in the Senate which would make it easier to get a nominee approved.  The nonsense of the Democommies will backfire in November, and they lose seats further yet.

Anyone that votes for a Democommie has an atrophied brain, plain and simple.

Just more of their scorched earth tantrum.

They'd repeal the Constitution, outlaw the Republican Party and make any opposition to themselves a crime if they could.

Can't say it often enough. The Democrat Party must be voted out of office and out of existence.

If that takes a President who isn't the child of Emily Post and the 2nd Coming, I'm completely OK with it.

Just more of their scorched earth tantrum.

The rats say they will return the 60 vote cloture rule for SCOTUS confirmations.  They won't.  The genie is out of the bottle.  The candidate that will own the other tribe will be the norm for a long time.  I don't understand the scorched earth reference but the rats are liars and they have nobody on their side because they nuked the Senate first.  It's just a promise.  Promises were meant to be broken.  Nobody keeps their promises.

I was told that traitors to America would get Locked Up.  Yet all I see is the Trump administration going to prison.     After all the rats have done to our savior, wouldn't you outlaw the rats?  The rats think you would.  As weird as it may seem the rats actually think the GOP wants to outlaw the rat party and make opposition to the GOP a crime.  Those opinions may not be any more rational than yours, but they believe it just the same.  They think you are evil because you have a different opinion.  They may not be able to express it logically but they will conclude you hate colored people, women,  the educated, young people, old people, conservationists, artists, other Americans, and citizens of other countries.

I agree that the rats suck.  They are even worse than the GOP sometimes.

On Twitter I have seen people advocating that we either get rid of Senate completely.

Love that last line

So true. It took a patriotic, vulgarish businessman from Queens to speak real truth to the real power in Washington DC, the permanent bureaucracy, the deep state; and he appears to be doing everything within the president’s power to return power to the people.

Not tired of winning!

They would do it for all appointments, not just SCOTUS. Their "power" doesn't come from approving Trumps nominees, it comes from blocking them. With a 60-vote threshold they can cherry-pick a few of their vulnerable members to vote with Trump, while still blocking his nominations...
