All Eyes On Turnout As Macedonians Head To Polls Over Name Change

Macedonians head to the polls on September 30 in a referendum on a name change that could pave the way for the country qualify for European Union and NATO membership.

The question doesn't appear to be whether they approve of the move, but whether enough will turn out to vote.

Opinion polls put the yes camp in a ballot asking Macedonians to approve an agreement its new Socialist government reached with Greece this year to change the country's name to the Republic of North Macedonia at around 70 percent.

Whether pertinent to any of us or not, this is an interesting story of them possibly changing their name to "Northern Macedonia" so as to not be confused with a part of Greece and I believe, their entry into the EU and Nato, as said in article, seems to mean, they've got to iron this out. It looks like the polls are overwhelmingly in favor of them calling themselves Northern Macedonia. I think they were a part of the old Yugoslavia as well. (?)

Map:

It sounds almost like a shoo-in, that they will go for that Northern Macedonia name. One can see how they border Greece.

The map is a bit old but shows where Macedonia is.
