GOP says Booker may face ethics review

The Senate's top two Republican lawmakers say Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) might be subject to an official review by the Senate Ethics Committee for releasing documents labeled “confidential” related to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s past work at the White House.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Hugh Hewitt on Friday that Booker's decision — which the Democratic senator acknowledged violated the Senate rules — was “unusual” and that he wouldn't be surprised if it was reviewed by the Senate Ethics Committee.

“Let me just say this. When you break the Senate rules, it’s something the Ethics Committee could take a look at. And that would be up to them to decide. But it’s routinely looked at the Ethics Committee,” McConnell said.

Pressed if he thought the committee should look into Booker “expeditiously,” McConnell demurred.

I'd leave Booker alone, it would emphasize he lied about the documents having not been released.  Any alleged "ethics violation" would be seen as attempting payback, and it would be better to let him sit and spin.

anyone that blatantly exclaims they will violate the rules of the Senate should ALWAYS be reviewed for ethical violations.

Otherwise, it will mean rules mean nothing.

I'm a little confused about something.  Since the documents were officially released by the custodian of the Bush papers, what law or rule did Booker break?  He "released"documents that were already unclassified.  That he lied about the classification just makes him an hysterical liar, and I don't think that's actionable.

I think the issue may be that even though the documents had been declassified, the Senate had not yet gotten around to authorizing their release.

Unless there is an actual chance of doing something actually hurtful to Booker, I don't think this should be pursued.  He's already been debunked and revealed as a drama queen with his pretentious histrionics and his comparison of himself with martyrs for truth.

He would revel in the spotlight of being accused of an ethics violation.

He announced he was willing to break Senate rules and release the documents.

Don't you think he should be investigated to ensure he did not actually break them since he said he would?

That is the purpose in the ethics review.

That is the purpose in the ethics review.

You know he's loudmouthing this thing so he can play victim, right?  How much investigating is required to vet what he said (and it can be done silently)?
