Eight killed in blast at South African munitions depot

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - At least eight people were killed in an explosion at a South African munitions depot in Somerset West, near Cape Town, but the cause of the incident was still unknown, a fire and rescue official said on Monday.

The blast occurred at Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) depot, a joint venture between Germany’s Rheinmetall Defence and South Africa’s state-owned arms maker Denel [DENSC.UL].

“I can confirm that eight people are dead,” said Theo Layne, a fire and rescue spokesman.

Gee, who could have possibly anticipated that threatening to steal (that is, expropriate without compensation) land from farmers who have worked it for generations would cause farmers to cut back on planting? Thus, we have Bloomberg telling us, "South Africa's economy unexpectedly shrank for the second consecutive quarter in the three months through June."

The recession, based on a second-quarter decline in GDP of 0.8%, is entirely due to a steep decline in agricultural production: "the agriculture market fell back by 29.2 per cent, taking 0.8 per cent off GDP."

This was entirely predictable. Half a year ago, I warned that with expropriation of white farmers, South Africa is embarking on a course headed toward disaster:

Suspects on the run after farm attack in NC

An 82-year-old man was attacked on his farm at approximately 7am on Wednesday morning close to Hartswater in the Northern Cape.

Police spokesperson, Sergio Kok, told OFM News, two suspects hit Johan Byles with a spade in his garage.

This is a mindblowing story, a journalist, Mark Minnie, along with another journalist, Chris Steyn published a book on an alleged "pedophile ring" in South Africa's government. The journalist, Minnie was found dead per a "suicide" in August, 2018, shortly after this book exposing this was publshed.

Mark Minnie always knew he could be killed for writing about the pedophile ring that he said he and journalist Chris Steyn discovered when he was a policeman and she a reporter under the apartheid regime. And if it happened, he expected, it would look like he took his own life.

His body was found two weeks ago, on August 13, on a small farm in Port Elizabeth, a city in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region. And his death did look like a suicide. There was even a note. But people who knew him don’t believe for a moment that he shot himself.

Rocco Rodriquez, who met Minnie in 2012 and worked with him across China auditing English language tests, remembers Minnie saying explicitly on more than one occasion, “They will kill me and make it look like a suicide.”

A relative of the late co-author of the controversial book ‘The Lost Boys of Bird Island’, Mark Minnie has dispelled his apparent suicide saying that the family believe Minnie was assassinated.

The controversial book, which was published last week, reveals a shocking expose of an official cover-up of an alleged paedophile ring involving former Minister of Defence Magnus Malan and three National Party cabinet ministers.

The gun found lying next to author Minnie’s body is said to belong to his friend and former police colleague Brent Barnes.
