New Study Casts Doubt on Using Aspirin to Prevent First Heart Attack

While the benefit of taking a low dose of aspirin — the world’s cheapest blood thinner — to prevent your second or third heart attack or stroke has been long accepted by doctors, the benefit of taking it to prevent your first such cardiovascular event, while much studied, has never been clear.

A study released in The Lancet yesterday suggests there’s no benefit, or at a minimum, “The use of aspirin in the primary prevention of cardiovascular events remains controversial,” as the study’s authors wrote in the summary of their results.
