San Francisco not only has the most expensive rents in the country, according to a new analysis, it also has the highest cost of child care.
The median rent in San Francisco is $3,455, while the average monthly cost of child care for one child is $1,955, per a HotPads study released Wednesday. The company, a rental search platform owned by Zillow, uses census data and from Care.com's annual Care Index which calculates the cost of child care assuming care is provided for 40 hours per week for 52 weeks annually.
To put the numbers into perspective, New Yorkers spend an average of $2,855 on rent monthly, and $1,630 on child care. In Chicago, the median rent is $1,785 while child care averages $1,500 per month. Nationally, the median rent payment is $1,500 — $115 more than the monthly cost of child care.
