A national veterans organization hammered the White House on Monday for its actions following the death of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., criticizing the president for showing “blatant disrespect†for McCain’s service and sacrifice.
AMVETS said in a statement to is “deeply disappointed†in President Trump's reaction to McCain’s passing Saturday. The Arizona senator, 81, died after a yearlong battle with brain cancer.
“It’s outrageous that the White House would mark American hero John McCain’s death with a two-sentence tweet, making no mention of his heroic and inspiring life,†Joseph Chenelly, AMVETS national executive director, said. “And by lowering flags for not one second more than the bare minimum required by law, despite a long-standing tradition of lowering flags until the funeral, the White House is openly showcasing its blatant disrespect for Sen. McCain’s many decades of service and sacrifice to our country as well as the service of all his fellow veterans.â€
Trump marked McCain’s death with a brief tweet Saturday night extending his sympathies to his family. White House aides reportedly pushed for the release of an official statement lauding McCain for his service in the military and the Senate and calling the senator a “hero,†but the president opted for the tweet instead.
The flags at the White House were lowered immediately following McCain’s death, but flew at full staff Monday morning.
The return of the White House flags to full staff prompted a host of criticism, including from some in the media who said the president showed a lack of respect and class for McCain.
