I would guess that whoever is calling the shots - wife, children or McCain himself - is just being stubborn.  Trying to stick it to those who might hope for more honorable behavior,  perhaps.  Nevertheless,  I hope he doesn't suffer  and that his family are comforted.

At this point, McCain is probably not aware enough to make such a decision.  Let's let that go.
