KFC restaurant hid Arizona-Mexico drug smuggling tunnel, officials say
Katherine Lam

Hidden beneath the bleak exterior of a fried chicken restaurant in the Southwest lurked the infrastructure of a sophisticated drug organization shipping meth, cocaine and heroin to the Arizona streets, officials said Wednesday.

Ivan Lopez, who previously ran a Kentucky Fried Chicken eatery in San Luis, Ariz., was arrested Aug. 13 when authorities pulled him over and discovered Lopez had stashed a slew of drugs in his truck, AZFamily.com reported. A canine unit alerted cops to the drug-filled toolboxes in the vehicle.

"[Lopez had] over 118 kilograms of methamphetamine, over six kilograms of cocaine, over three kilograms of fentanyl, over 13 kilograms of white heroin and over six kilograms of brown heroin," said Scott Brown, a Homeland Security Investigations special agent. "Just the three kilograms of fentanyl translates to over 3 million dosage units."

The tunnel was located in a former KFC restaurant.  (Homeland Security Investigations and Yuma Sector Border Patrol)

Border news if not immigration news exactly BUT... what if they smuggled illegals in this way? It seems they could have come in unscathed very easily!

They never should have gotten rid of the building I suppose or seriously, bury any signs of this tunnel. The restaurant was apparently out of operation. The tunnel was from a home in Mexico to the KFC.  It's almost difficult to fathom.

It sounds like this tunnel was discovered only after the restaurant closed or something like that.

Would you risk that drug operation on illegals running their mouths?

The druswould seem to me less risky. Higher profit margin.

I wonder how long it functioned as a drug tunnel? Years?

The more humans involved on either side, the greater the risk.

That's a good comment, the BP probably can question immigrants they catch.

On the other hand, a tunnel like that, I'm sure one could ask for handsome fees to travel it. A few thousand? Something.... <---- that is, if it is safe enough for humans to use and I assume it is. Maybe humans did use it. Who knows how many tunnels there could be like that.  A bit of an engineering feat to make such a tunnel.
