George Will Is Wrong about the Economy
« on: August 22, 2018, 01:58:13 am »
National Review
David L. Bahnsen
Aug. 21, 2018

Conditions now are fundamentally different from 2008.

George Will’s recent syndicated column, “America Is Overdue for Another Economic Disaster,” puts me in the painful position of having to decide if I want to ignore a topic that should not be ignored, or if I want to take on one of the great op-ed writers of all time. I am not sure I have disagreed with even three columns George has written over the decades I’ve been reading him, and I hold him in extraordinarily high regard. But his stab at economic fearmongering warrants a response.

The article serves as a compilation of the most commonly uttered refrains from market bears about the current stock market and economy: that this bull market is the longest ever, that a Lehman Brothers–like collapse is around the corner, that this economic expansion is long in the tooth, and that deficits and debt stand to blow us to smithereens. As is usually the case, even with many writers who are but a fraction as smart and gifted as George Will, the argument comes by blending technically accurate factoids with deceiving or poorly nuanced conclusions.

We are due a significant correction.  I seriously doubt it will be as bad as 2008 though.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

The average, give or take, is 7 years.
Certainly, some have been more painful than others, and 7 years is an average.
But, yes, it will come.
It always does.
Like you and I know all to well, we will have to deal with another Hurricane, eventually.
Hopefully, not too severe.

When has George Will ever been right about anything?

Not sure when it happened, but it has happened.
I used to enjoy his writing, on conservatism and baseball, but since Trump, and perhaps before, he's lost his way.
Too much time hanging around the television round tables, I suppose.

Will was never a conservative, any more than than Leon Trotsky was.
For the gullible, anyone who appears on tee-vee and mouths a couple
of trite banalities about family values or gun rights, is labeled a conservative.
These media nobodies are simply frauds and hustlers riding any stagecoach
allowing them to peddle their so called "books" and make a nice living.
The most egregious example is FOX, riddled w/these embarrassments who
wouldn't know a Conservative Principle if it bit them in the ass and then
walked around to shake their hand!!!

I disagree.
I read him regularly in the 80's up to 2000's and he was pretty solid.
Something changed? Age? TDS? I don't know.
Fox tries to redefine Conservatism to whatever the flavor of the day is, on that we can agree.

Like hell. He backed fricken' Baker for President in 80 and when he collapsed he jumped on another RINO squish Bush's bandwagon. He bashed the living shit out of Reagan up until the last minute when the writing was on the wall and he backed Reagan over Anderson. Will has been a fraud and a clown his entire life and now his senility and stupidity is culminating in his full exposure as the Beltway hack he has been his whole life.

In short, he can go to hell.

C'mon, the same Baker that was Reagan's chief of staff?
Seems as if Reagan had less of a problem with him than you do.
Bush? Turned out Reagan liked him well enough to be VP.
That he liked Baker and Bush over Reagan bugs me less, since, ultimately, Reagan liked them both.
I will agree with you that lately he's gone off the reservation, no doubt, 100%.
You'll have no argument from me there.

Sorry, Madam, your slip is showing, but this Howard Baker Jr., this impotent senate minority leader, was one that was a Reagan chief of staff.

Are you on crack? Howard Baker ran for President in '80 with Reagan, Dole and Bush. Harold Stassen ran as well. James Baker was an effing lawyer, political hack and Presidential appointee. He never ran for shit.

Howard Baker Jr. was Reagan's Cheif of Staff for 2 years, 1987 and 1988.
It is the same Howard Baker Jr. that ran for President in 1980.
Maybe you're confusing him with James Baker?
I don't know.
The cracks not mine, officer, I swear, but the beer is.

Fondle?
LOL.
Just saying, 2 of the people you've dissed, Reagan hired, and Will, not unlike former NT's that have come around, also sang Reagan's praises, albeit late to the show.
I voted for Reagan twice.
I ain't mad.
He hired who he hired.
Will wrote some stuff that I agreed with around 1980 to 2000,  some I didn't, nothing now.
You know, after you piss on those graves and shake it more than twice, you're "fondling".

Fair enough, we agree to disagree.
As Edmund Burke asserted, principled conservatism is derived from
the Natural Law involving attitudes and sentiments about human nature;
having nothing to do w/politics ideology, economics or religion.
Anyway, be well.
