Ocasio-Cortez on How to Pay for Her Ideas: Raise Taxes, Cut Military Spending
Posted By Andrew Kugle On July 27, 2018 @ 1:22 pm In Politics | No Comments

Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday the U.S. government should fund her federal government program and policy ideas by raising taxes and cutting military spending.

Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," asked the democratic socialist how she would pay for her ambitious agenda that includes universal health care, tuition free higher education, and 100 percent use of renewable energy, among other programs.

The sad thing is that people who love socialism think she's brilliant.  And she has quite a number of these fans.

Far too many voters think Socialism is just dandy.  They think it can be prettied up by adding "Democratic" to the name, when all that does is buy Communism by the drink, to paraphrase P.J. O'Rourke.  Nobody bothers to look at the arithmetic to see that confiscating all wealth from "The Rich" wouldn't put a dent in the spending the Socialists propose.

Here's how Ocasio-Cortez would pay for the trillions in new spending she is proposing
By Rick Moran

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and was asked a simple question that any politician worth his salt would hit out of the park for a home run.

How was she going to pay for the trillions of dollars in spending for all the free stuff she was proposing?

Daily Caller:

"This is an excellent, excellent question," she replied.  "I sat down with a Nobel Prize economist last week – I can't believe I can say that, it's really weird – But one of the things that we saw is, if people pay their fair share, if corporations and the ultra wealthy – for example, as Warren Buffett likes to say, if he pays as much as his secretary paid, 15 percent tax rate, if corporations paid – if we reverse the tax bill, raised our corporate tax rate to 28 percent ... if we do those two things and also close some of those loopholes, that's $2 trillion right there."

And taxing the rich has been tried in other countries, but has failed miserably.  Sooner or later, everyone ends up paying for this "free stuff" one way or the other.

But when you try to explain that to the true believers -- show them examples of the disastrous results of socialism wherever it's been tried -- and all you get is a blank stare.  They seem to somehow think that because this is America, we will do socialism right and it will work.

...because we'll do it "Democratically," we're a "Democracy," right?

You are correct, it wouldn't take long for the Socialists go after the middle class wealth, for the same reason Willie Sutton robbed banks:  Because that's where the money is.  It's inevitable, and has been demonstrated in all the Socialist/Communist shithole countries to date.  It's never worked as advertised.  Never.

Ms. Ocasio Cortez and her ilk should be able to do as she desires.  Just not on the federal level.  None of these things are within the scope of the Constitution.  If New York wants to collect the taxes and pay for these things, more power to 'em.  If we want to clearly and undeniably show the problems of socialism, that's the way to do it.

CA and NY are doing a great job of teaching this lesson.  It remains to be seen how many willing students there are.

Yeah, but unfortunately the full consequences are buffered by the feds doing things they don't have the Constitutional authority to do.

I have often wondered how the Founding Fathers couldn't see and forestall the problems a freely money-printing and spending federal government would create.  I think they did and that's why they didn't give the feds that authority.

You know.... for the sake of foreign relations between the USA and Venezuela..... I really think we should send Alexandria down there as an advisor to help them figure out all their government stuff.   I mean.... wouldn't that be the kind, caring and empathetic thing to do?

The problem is, we have to elect them first before we can start sending them on junkets.

I really need to find an update of those stats to get the word out, graphically.  (Yes, that was intentional.   )

If you do, would you look at the numbers on how long it would take us to pay off the national debt, maybe using the average rate of growth and inflation over the last 50-100 years?

Military spending approximately 16% of our total federal budget. The spending for Social Security and Medicare, Medicaid,if I recall, are over half. So yes, even if you got rid of all military spending you could not cover the spending she proposes. And raising taxes, not just on rich people but anybody, changes human behavior. Two examples of this are what they did with the soda tax in Philadelphia, and what businesses and people do when taxes get too high in states

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.
